About the role:
Reporting to the Senior Geologist Supervisor, Modelling & Estimation, the Geologist, Modelling & Estimation is responsible for providing business-wide technical leadership in geological modelling, resource and reserve estimation workflows, and resource governance across Elk Valley Resources’ four operating mines and multiple projects.
The position is based at EVR’s Sparwood head office and is a permanent, full-time role, with occasional travel to local operations.
To be successful, we are looking for someone who is technically strong, intellectually curious, and motivated to challenge the status quo. You bring a solid foundation in coal resource modelling and estimation, strong computer science and data analysis skills, and a genuine commitment to continuous improvement, sound scientific practice, and high-quality technical documentation. You are comfortable working independently on complex, open-ended problems and are willing to develop new skills and expertise as required.

In this role you will:

  • Participate in and adhere to health and safety programs and policies
  • Design, document, and implement standardized modelling and estimation workflows, including development of clear SOPs used consistently across EVR operations
  • Act as a subject matter expert, identifying and promoting leading practice in geological modelling, estimation, uncertainty analysis, and resource governance
  • Support site practitioners and Qualified Persons to deliver high-quality, transparent, and defensible resource and reserve estimates
  • Evaluate, implement, and support enterprise geoscience software and systems
  • Develop custom geoscience tools (primarily in Python) to improve efficiency, reduce risk, and support strategic decision-making
  • Lead or support specialized geoscience studies and supervise external consultants
  • Contribute to peer reviews, internal audits, and governance processes related to resources and reserves
  • Undertake hands-on modelling or estimation work as required

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology or Earth Sciences (postgraduate qualification is an asset)
  • Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) designation with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC), or eligibility for registration
  • 5+ years experience in geological modelling and mineral resource estimation, preferably in structurally complex metallurgical coal deposits
  • Strong practical understanding of coal estimation workflows, including sampling and data collection, geophysical log interpretation, data management, seam and ply correlation, depth adjustment, working section definition, compositing, thickness and grade estimation, density estimation, coal quality and washability characterization, mass balance and moisture basis calculations, resource classification, and application of modifying factors
  • Fluency with CIM Best Practice Guidelines (2019), JORC Code (2012), and Australian Guidelines for the Estimation and Classification of Coal Resources (2014)
  • Experience in data analysis in Python, SQL and Excel
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills
  • Proficiency with Leapfrog Geo, Hexagon MinePlan3D, and acQuire GIMS. Familiarity with Maptek Vulcan ISM, Datamine Minescape, Geovia Minex, or other coal modelling software an asset
  • Familiarity with conditional simulation and geostatistical techniques an asset
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License or equivalent
The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
